The amazingly straight northern half of that coast resembles and endless palm-lined beach broken here and there by a river mouth. The ever verdant region is also the cradle of Costa Rica´s Afro-Caribbean culture, which implies different cuisine, music and language than what you´ll encounter in the rest of the country.

Day 5 - Cahuita National Park

Cahuita National Park was created to protect the country´s biggest coastal coral reef - a vast marine garden composed of amazing colors and life forms - but the park´s forests, beaches and estuaries comprise comparable biological diversity. Submerged off several points are extensive coral reefs that include such intriguing life forms as colorful sponges, sea stars, moray eels and eagle rays. Explore on your own the quiet fishing communities, coral reefs and rainforest reserves that complement the picturesque beaches of the southern Caribbean Coast. The Caribbean is also an area of exceptional nature wealth, since beyond the rows of palm trees you can often find lowland rainforest that is inhabited by troops of monkeys, legions of tiny lizzards and countless bird species. Discover a Three-toad Sloth on its gentle change of tree and have lunch at Maxi´s restaurant at the end of the road in Manzanillo Beach! Caribbean style lobster is the favorite local dish.

Today you will have a great drive around the Arenal Lake and up to the continental divide where Monteverde is located. Due to its high altitude – some 4,662 ft (1,440 m) above sea level – Monteverde is privileged to receive a steady supply of clouds and the life-giving moisture that they contain. This moisture, often in the form of fog, catches on the branches of the tallest trees and drips down to the other organisms below. This helps to support a complex and far-reaching ecosystem, one that harbors over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species, and over 2,500 varieties of plants, 420 of which are orchids alone. The very special cloud forest vegetation found in this area hosts an incredible amount of biodiversity that for a long time has been a delight for nature and adventure lovers.
